OUR GRAND DRIVE

Complex
Journey

In late 2019, HumanDrive will complete a 200+ mile journey across the UK, setting a precedent in the UK for the successful deployment of an autonomous, human-like vehicle undergoing a complex journey through real-world driving conditions (country roads, A-roads, motorways).

Along the way it will help establish the UK as a global hub for the research, development and better understand the user needs for automated vehicles. What’s more, it will increase public awareness of and confidence in autonomous vehicles, and enable authorities responsible for our road network and safety to benefit from developments in automated transport system technologies.

Trials on closed roads have begun – final route to be confirmed soon.

During the trials, the automated vehicles will be driven by test drivers on test tracks. As the project develops and the technology matures, the vehicles will venture out onto public roads, mingling with the natural traffic flow. Highly trained test drivers will always be at the wheel, ready to take control if needed.   During the Grand Drive, the vehicle will autonomously drive across a variety of road types; from country roads through to motorways.

HumanDrive Case Study.

Successful completion of this project will take the UK one step closer to autonomous vehicles on the road, helping the UK government to fulfil its ambition of seeing fully driverless cars on the road by 2021. Find out more about the benefits this project will bring.

Autonomous Car Project seeks to emulate natural human driving in UK driving environment..

A 30-month Autonomous Vehicle project led by Nissan’s European Technical Centre, as a part of Renault-Nissan Alliance research activities, will culminate in the most complex journey yet attempted across the UK without driver input. The ‘HumanDrive’ project vehicle will be expected to deal with a variety of UK unique driving scenarios, including country roads, high speed roundabouts, A-Roads, Motorways in live traffic and different environmental conditions. Additionally, the vehicle will emulate a natural human driving style, providing an enhanced experience for the occupants.

The HumanDrive project will develop a prototype autonomous vehicle with the aim of successfully demonstrating a lengthy end-to-end journey in a variety of settings.
